These days, everyone is looking to save a little extra on their electrical bill especially with APS raising their rates on energy consumption. We’ve given you tips on how to reduce your electrical bill in the past, and we thought it might be helpful to examine how the average Arizona home consumes electricity.
According to the US Department of Energy, the average Arizona home consumes ¼ of its energy by running the air conditioner, which is 4x the national average. However, according to APS, 40% of the energy consumption of an average Arizona home goes to cooling with that number leapfrogging to cooling being 70% of your total bill in the summer. Either way, cooling your home is a significant expenditure. If you are looking to save money on your electrical bill, making sure your cooling system is tuned up and consuming energy wisely would be a great place to start. APS has some great tips to save money on cooling costs. We also wrote an article recently how a smart thermostat could save you a lot of money as well.
However, a significant amount of the average Arizonan’s electrical bill (43%) comes from appliances, electronics, and lighting. Since this is such a large expenditure, little things like turning off lights when not in use, unplugging/powering off “energy vampires” (computers, phone chargers, and streaming devices), and using LED light bulbs could potentially mean big savings on your bill. In addition, we recommend using newer energy efficient appliances. While people love to use old fridges in Yuma, your second fridge in your laundry room or garage could be costing you hundreds in excess energy costs. If you need a second fridge, get a newer energy efficient one!
The third largest expenditure of the average Arizona home is water heating, accounting for 17% of average consumption. Turning down your water heater by 10 degrees or more could save you 3-5% on your water heating costs. Lastly, a great way to save money is to simply not use hot water. By washing your clothes and dishes with cold water, you stand to save some green!
It should be unsurprising that heating only accounts for 15% of the average Arizonan’s electrical bill. However, it does get cold in the winter. By ensuring that your heating/cooling system is well maintained, you can save some money in the winter months. In addition, pull out those heavy blankets and wear a sweatshirt…. Less heat means more money!
