    Average Arizona Home Energy Breakdown

These days, everyone is looking to save a little extra on their electrical bill especially with APS raising their rates on energy consumption. We’ve given you tips on how to reduce your electrical bill in the past, and we thought it might be helpful to examine how the average Arizona home consumes electricity.

According to the US Department of Energy, the average Arizona home consumes ¼ of its energy by running the air conditioner, which is 4x the national average.  However, according to APS, 40% of the energy consumption of an average Arizona home goes to cooling with that number leapfrogging to cooling being 70% of your total bill in the summer.  Either way, cooling your home is a significant expenditure. If you are looking to save money on your electrical bill, making sure your cooling system is tuned up and consuming energy wisely would be a great place to start. APS has some great tips to save money on cooling costs. We also wrote an article recently how a smart thermostat could save you a lot of money as well.

However, a significant amount of the average Arizonan’s electrical bill (43%) comes from appliances, electronics, and lighting. Since this is such a large expenditure, little things like turning off lights when not in use, unplugging/powering off “energy vampires” (computers, phone chargers, and streaming devices), and using LED light bulbs could potentially mean big savings on your bill.  In addition, we recommend using newer energy efficient appliances. While people love to use old fridges in Yuma, your second fridge in your laundry room or garage could be costing you hundreds in excess energy costs. If you need a second fridge, get a newer energy efficient one!

The third largest expenditure of the average Arizona home is water heating, accounting for 17% of average consumption. Turning down your water heater by 10 degrees or more could save you 3-5% on your water heating costs. Lastly, a great way to save money is to simply not use hot water. By washing your clothes and dishes with cold water, you stand to save some green!

It should be unsurprising that heating only accounts for 15% of the average Arizonan’s electrical bill. However, it does get cold in the winter. By ensuring that your heating/cooling system is well maintained, you can save some money in the winter months. In addition, pull out those heavy blankets and wear a sweatshirt…. Less heat means more money!

    Are Smart Thermostats Worth it?

Should you get a smart thermostat? Smart appliances are all the rage with people turning to technology to give them the ability to program their appliances using their phone. Wouldn’t it be cool to program your thermostat without getting out of bed or while you are out of town? With a smart thermostat, you could do that!

How does a smart thermostat work?

A smart thermostat replaces your traditional thermostat. Using your phone, tablet, or computer, you can program your thermostat settings at or away from your home. This allows you to turn your thermostat up or down or turn off/on your heating/cooling system via an app.

Can a smart thermostat save me money?

Yes! Although they require an initial investment, properly programming them can save you some cash. These thermostats can detect patterns of occupation and set your thermostat accordingly. Why heat or cool an unoccupied house?  The thermostat can even be set to run right before you come home so that when you arrive your home is the appropriate temperature. According to APS, you can save as much as 15%  in energy costs using a smart thermostat. That means you can save $360 a year if your electricity costs are $200 a month! In addition, APS will send you a $30.00 rebate when you properly install, register, and program a smart thermostat in your home.

What does it take to start using a smart thermostat?

You need to do a few things first. First, make sure your HVAC and heating system are compatible. Many of the smart thermostat manufacturers like ecobee and Nest have online compatibility checks so you can see if it works with your system before you buy. Second, you need to download and familiarize yourself with the app and be able to connect the thermostat to your Wi-Fi. Last (but most importantly) make sure the thermostat is installed correctly. If you would like D&H Electric to do the installation to ensure it is done correctly give us a call at (928) 726-5671! We’d be happy to help!

    So, are they worth it?

Yes! We think if installed and used correctly you could save some serious cash with a smart thermometer (especially in the summer months). Once it’s installed, all you have to do is make sure you keep up with the programming. Think about how much money you could save after a few years!

Maybe you could do that LED landscaping project you always wanted to do with the money you’ll save! Thanks for reading and remember to use D&H Electric for all your electrical needs!

Getting to Know a D&H Employee: Mike Powers

Meet Mike Powers. He’s the Energy Efficiency Specialist at D&H Electric. He’s had a lot of different jobs in the past: he’s been a teacher, a retail manager, a personal trainer, and a consultant. However, he loves his current role at D&H Electric because he is “constantly learning” and “gets to have fun, wow clients, and work with the best!” In his spare time, he loves to play rugby and his hidden talent is that he can draw and paint.

We sat down and asked Mike a few questions about his work:

What does a typical day look like for you at D&H Electric?  It’s different every day and that’s the beauty of working at D&H.  I never know what my day will look like.  It can change from hour to hour.  I spend my day meeting clients, visiting job sites, counting the lights, and delivering proposals.  I carve out a little part of my day learning about new products, technology, a client, or how I can leverage new technologies to make our company better.

How do you define success? For me, success is defined by delivering what I promised to my clients, my fellow team and to my company.  My personal philosophy is to learn and utilize what I learn to help others.

What has surprised you the most about working at D&H Electric?  I never realized how important light was.  Light used to be something I never gave much thought about until bulbs went out or I lost lights due to power failure.  I have a very different appreciation for lights.  Lights are not created equal.

If you could give any business owner advice about their electrical set up what would it be?  I would refer them to our professional staff to see how we can make their facility become more efficient.  I can help them with their lighting needs while saving them money.  Electric bills are one of the larger expenses and converting to LED will help any business save energy, reducing expenditure!

If you could give any homeowner advice about their electrical set up what would it be?  The best advice is to consult with a professional like our amazing electricians!

Why You Should Always Use Licensed Electricians

A licensed electrician will ensure the work done is carried out safely and meets the relevant safety standards. Using a licensed electrician reduces the risk of fire, electric shock or any other electric incidents occurring in your home. This means you and your family can rest easy knowing you are protected.

Malfunction or electrical failures are some of the major reasons as to why there are fires in homes.  These unexpected disasters ultimately kill as much as 500 people in the United States and cause even more injuries and millions of dollars in property damage every year. Having a certified electrician can help you prevent such catastrophic events.

Bad wiring is ugly, dangerous, and could actually cost you more in the long run. Use D&H Electric and get the best!

If you are thinking about having some renovations done to your building to improve its function and appeal, don’t forget to have the electrical wiring updated by a commercial electrician as well. Many employers forget to do so only to end up experiencing electrical problems with their facilities later on. To avoid the need for electrical renovations, later on, get them done by a bonded and insured commercial electrician while your renovations are going on. It’ll be cheaper that way because there are fewer walls and structures to maneuver through.

Don’t take chances with your building electrical wiring. Even the smallest electrical nuances can turn into major repair hazards for your workers. Bear in mind that it is your responsibility as an employer to provide your workers with a safe and hazard-free work environment. If you fail in duties to keep your building safe, you could end up dealing with workers’ compensation claims, litigation, and other inconveniences that may hurt your profits and reputation.

D&H Electric employs quality licensed electricians and fully guarantees their work. They are bonded and insured in both Arizona and California and have won Yuma’s Best Electrical Services back to back (2016 and 2017).  When you choose D&H Electric, you choose to go with the best. Why Choose LED Landscape Lighting?

Great looking landscape light design can increase the value of your home by enhancing its curb appeal and security. Various studies and reports have put this increase anywhere from 7-28% over homes without good landscaping or lighting. It has been proven that well-landscaped and properly lit homes also tend to be on the market for a shorter period of time. The National Homebuyer’s Association consistently shows outdoor lighting at the top of its list of “most desirable features.” In fact, most of the homeowners surveyed consider outdoor lighting “desirable,” and a majority of those consider it “essential.”

You want a more sustainable property.

LED light sources are gaining in popularity due to the growing energy conservation movement. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, no other lighting technology offers as much potential to save energy and enhance the quality of building environments. LED lights provide environmentally friendly fixtures which consume less energy. This means lower energy bills, less time spent changing halogen bulbs, and less waste.

Not only does the energy savings mentioned above make LEDs more sustainable, but so does their ability to emit less heat which helps with longer lifespan, reducing the need for maintenance and replacements.

The benefits of LED landscape lighting:

    1. Pure, beautiful, consistent light enhances your landscape’s natural colors.
    2. Uses 75% less energy than halogen for long-term cost savings.
    3. No light bulbs to buy or replace.
    4. Environmentally friendly design means less energy waste and no bulbs to throw away.
    5. Fixtures are tested to withstand the elements for years of enjoyment.

How to Save Money on Your Electric Bill: Tips from D&H Electric

Looking to save some money on your electric bill? Well, we here are D&H Electric are here for you! Below are some tips to save you some serious green!

    1. Adjust your water heater. Your water heater accounts for 12% of your utility bill. For every 10 degrees, you reduce the temperature of your water heater, you can save 3-5% on your water heating costs. That means if you lower your water heater to 120 degrees, you could save up to 10% on your water heating costs!
    2. Use LED bulbs. LED light bulbs use up to 90% LESS energy than incandescent bulbs. LED light bulbs can also last between 30-50 times longer than a conventional light bulb. Replace your most commonly used bulbs and see some serious savings on your electrical bill!
    3. Ditch or upgrade that second fridge. 1 in 3 Americans has a second fridge. Of those homes, about half have a second fridge that is over 20 years old. These elderly fridges are huge energy hogs, costing you hundreds of dollars in energy costs! In the last 20 years, refrigerator manufacturers have made massive strides. A modern fridge will cost $215 – $270 less per year on your energy bill than an older one. These fridges may cost even more if in a garage in the hot desert heat! If you must have a second refrigerator, buy a newer one and you will save more money in the long run!
    4. Disconnect those energy vampires. While you might think you are saving electricity by putting your devices on standby, those devices are still sucking energy and money! According to the US Department of Energy, leaving your gadgets on standby accounts for 10% or more of your total electric bill. Turn off your devices (laptops, computers, receivers, streaming devices) when not in use and unplug that phone charger when you aren’t using it to save some serious cash on your electric bill!
    5. Turn off lights and use dimmer switches. Lighting accounts for 14% of the average American electric bill. Turn off your lights when not in use or install a dimmer so you can control for the right amount of light you would like to use (which will reduce electricity). Not sure how to install a dimmer switch? Call D&H Electric at (928)726-5671 and we can help!

Why You Should Upgrade to LED Lighting at Your Business

LED lights are a game changer. Recently, Walmart announced that they saved over 100 million in energy costs by converting to LED lighting in their stores and parking lots. Obviously, energy savings is one of the largest appeals of LED lighting. However, LED (which stands for light emitting diodes) lighting is also brighter, more energy efficient, and the bulbs last longer!

So what are some ways that LED lighting could benefit your business?

    1. Lower Costs – LED lighting can save you up to 70% on your energy bill. With energy prices rising and expected to rise in the future, this is a major appeal of LED lighting. This means that converting to LED lighting will usually pay for itself in less than 3 years. Over the life of your business, return on investment can be 12-15 times the cost of installation! In addition, the longer life of the fixture/bulb also means no maintenance cost and because the fixtures/bulbs are more energy efficient LED lighting can also reduce your HVAC costs!
    2. LED Lights provide superior light – Our before and after video speaks for itself. LED lights provide superior and uniform light. They look better, and the bulbs don’t suffer from the same issues that legacy lighting has (dark spots, burnt out bulbs, etc.). Unlike other lighting systems, LEDs do not require warm-up time and are instant on/off. They also perform better in extreme temperatures, something you want to have in the desert!
    3. LED Lights can keep your employees and customers safe – LED lighting in a workspace is brighter and provides uniform color and better contrasts. In some fields, those subtle differences can reduce accidents and workplace injury. When we talk about outside lighting, the superior and brighter light can reduce property vandalism and crime as the brightness can deter criminal activity. A criminal’s friend is darkness, and LED lights will eliminate the dark spots in parking lots and behind buildings where criminals lurk.
    4. LED Lights allow you to focus on your business – Our lights and our work come with a 5-year warranty and guarantee. With the LED lights rated between 50,000 and 100,000 hours, you won’t be replacing fixtures/bulbs anytime soon. After 5 years, your LED lights will be operating at 90% illumination – those with HID or fluorescents will have changed their bulbs many times over. Your business will look better, your costs will be lower, and your employees and customers will be safer. With all these benefits, you will have more time to focus on your business.
